Dear reader,

I hope at least once in the past two months you wondered what I have been doing instead of writing here!

April got busy with work, and May is a month with two big Bulgarian holidays. So there was lots of preparations for the celebrations, namely rehearsals with the folk dance group I am a part of. Bulgarian folk music is very lively, happy music – particularly the dance music. From the songs – we have many sad ones, about the struggles of my people as a nation and about many common-to-everyone topics like unrequited or lost love; yet the dance music – oh, it is all joy! And the steps can get very complicated!

Here is a quick example from a celebration in March, where we dance the Graovsko horo. We aren’t good yet, but we are trying.

Now we are preparing another dance, so hopefully in the next month I will have another video to share with you. The music, dance and clothing are the very unique art of the Bulgarian people created over centuries. Being part of its presentation today and the weekly informal dancing at the studio fills me with satisfaction and joy! I always look forward to it. And I believe this is what real art should always do!
