I found something SOOO exciting!

Here is an artist I found yesterday: Aline Brant! She embroiders onto black and white photographs. Screen Shot 2018-06-11 at 11.25.42 AMHow amazing is this? She is also the photographer! Why am I sharing this? Because I love it and because I’m thinking about why it is that I love it. Going back to the Oxford definition of art (check several posts back), I think I clearly appreciate it for its beauty and emotional power – it pleases me and it moves me! In that sense the definition is correct. However, what’s pleasing me isn’t some kind of external qualities we can identify as “beauty,” but an internal value attributed to the human being in the photo, which is something that I value myself, therefore this work is pleasing to me – I find it beautiful and appreciate it. I discover that for art to be effective, a communication between the maker and the viewer has to happen – not of external qualities like color, shape, or sound, but of internal entities – value, love/hate, curiosity – those things I call the invisible.

Please check out Aline Brant’s work on her website and Instagram. It is amazing!
