I’m reading “Dear Theo – The Autobiography of Vincent van Gogh” edited by Irving and Jean Stone. It is simply selected excerpts from Vincent van Gogh’s letters to his brother Theo. It is wonderful stuff, but it makes me so despondent! There is so much sadness in his words! I’ve considered him one of the best artists humanity has and would ever have, and reading his writings confirms that for me. Definitely one of the best that will ever be! And the sad part I see is the lack of understanding he encountered from most people around him. Some has changed since then, but how much? Enough? In writing and thinking about art, it isn’t only for the artists that I write, but for those around them as well. For the great misunderstandings about art I observe in our time are not only on the part of the artists, but also on the part of those experiencing the arts. I do hope the thoughts and ideas I share here bring results one day.
